Can items in an upcoming auction be previewed?

Yes, items are available for in-person preview by appointment only. However, some of the items listed in our auctions are not on site and therefore may not be accessible within a particular timeframe. If you would like to make an appointment to preview an item, please contact Showplace’s Live Online Auction Department at least 24 hours in advance of the time you plan to visit.

Why is an item listed in another auction when it looked as if it sold in the last one?

When it states online: SOLD TO LIVE FLOOR BIDDER, this can mean one of two things: (1) either the item was sold to a phone or absentee bidder, or (2) it was bought in by the auctioneer because it did not meet the reserve. In the second instance, Showplace may re-list the unsold item in a subsequent auction. Unfortunately, the interface provided by our online auctions currently has no way of conveying whether a piece is bought in or sold to an offline bidder.

What is the difference between bidding online or leaving an absentee or phone bid with Showplace?

A bidder may place her bid with us in one of three convenient ways: (1) register to bid live online, (2) by submit a phone bid form, requesting that we contact her to take her bid over the phone, or (3) submit an absentee bid form with her bid amount. Phone bidders are contacted during a sale while the lots they would like to bid on appear live online, and place their bids with a bid taker from the auction house. Absentee bidders simply submit the appropriate form, on which they indicate their bid amounts for the auction house to carry out on their behalf.

Does Showplace guarantee authenticity?

Yes, Showplace guarantees the authenticity of every item in our auctions. If for some reason we have misrepresented an item, the buyer may obtain an opinion in writing from a recognized expert. If the expert judges the item inauthentic or otherwise misrepresented, it may be returned to Showplace in the same condition as at the time of sale, and the buyer’s full purchase price will be refunded.

Does Showplace ship internationally?

Yes. Typically we ship USPS unless specified otherwise by the buyer.

Does Showplace insure shipped items?

Yes. Every item is insured for its full value unless specified otherwise by the buyer. All shipping quotes include insurance.

Can i use my own shipper/carrier?

Yes.

Do you ship freight?

Yes. We use Plycon unless specified otherwise.

What kind of merchandise does Showplace sell at auction?

Showplace Live Online Auctions lists a variety of fine and decorative arts. Our sales typically include a diverse offering of fine paintings, drawings, and prints, along with a wide selection of Asian antiques and European decorative objects. In most cases Showplace does not accept consignments with reserves under $500, nor do we accept collectibles and large furniture.

How much commission is charged to consignors?

The commission rate, or consignment fee, is 15% for items sold for $500 and above, and 25% for items sold below $500. The consignment fee is deducted from the realized hammer price. No consignment fees or buyback fees are collected for unsold items.

Can I specify a reserve for my item?

Yes.

What if my item does not sell at auction?

You can agree to re-list the item with us in an upcoming auction on the condition that the reserve is reduced by at least 10%. Or, if your item is stored on site at Showplace, you may make arrangements to pick it up within 10 days of the close of the auction in which it was last listed.

Am I responsible for shipping my items if they sell?

No. Showplace packs and ships the items at the buyer’s expense.

If I sell an item, how long will it take for Showplace to pay me?

You should expect payment from Showplace within 30 days of the date the item is shipped to the buyer.
