Rare Dartmouth Gazette Front Page with Article by Daniel Webster
Description:
Original Dartmout Gazette front and back page from December 6, 1800. The piece is noteworthy as it contains a front page article written by Daniel Webster (psseudonym "Icarus") when he was a student at Dartmouth (1797-1801). The article gives discourse regarding the political implications should Thomas Jefferson be elected the President of the United States. Webster went on to be a member of the House of Representatives and the Senate and was the Secretary of State under three presidents. This issue of the Dartmouth Gazette student newspaper is most likely the only one remaining aside from a copy in the Rauner special collections of the Dartmouth College Library. A great piece of Americana and political historical documents.
The piece has Age appropriate wear; writing on the reverse (interior pages) but the date of this writing is uncertain.
