An Art Deco watercolor painting with mythical themes by Eugene Savage (1883-1978). The study for the ceiling of the Elks Club in Chicago, Illinois. Titled "Muses Bringing Food for the Feast on Mt. Olympus,"and signed in the lower center. Eugene Savage is known for his melding of classical antiquity and modernity. When awarded a fellowship by the American Academy to study in Rome, he dedicated his attention to ancient Greek and Roman Sculpture. His later works reflect this influence whil incorporating modern sensibility. After leaving Rome, Savage was commissioned to pain numerous murals throughout the United States and Europe, including a ceiling triptych in the Elks Club National Memorial in Chicago, for which these were studies. the project was massive and brought together many of the most prominent artists of the time. the composition is subtly surreal, partly as a consideration for viewer position.
A framed watercolor by Alexandro De Canedo entitled "The Neophytes"and painted in 1933. Canedo was born in Mexico City in 1902 to a Spanish father and American mother. At 15 he studied in Paris at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts under the sculptor Jean Magrou. He held is first exhibition of pencil drawings at the Circolo Artistico in Rome in 1927 and in 1928 moved to the U.S. where his first New York Exhibition of pencil drawings was the inaugural exhibition of the Cheshire Gallery in the Chrysler Building in 1932. He continued exhibiting in and around New York and by 1935 he was showing both watercolors and drawings. He continued producing and exhibiting through the 1940s and relocated to Los Angeles in the 1950s where he was active in the L.A. art scene through the late 60's. He passed away in 1978.
An oil on canvas painting of a reclining partially nude woman and two cats in an interior scene. The piece is signed and dated (1931) in the lower right. Fernand Gaston Longchamp was an impressionist and expressionist artist born in America to a French mother and Cayuga-Iroquois father. His family moved to France around the time of Gaston's birth and his father, an artist himself, was acquainted with many prominent artists in Paris such as Renoir, Signac and Seurat. Gaston would eventually apprentice with his father and became familiar with these artists himself. By fourteen he was working with painters in Montmartre and benefited from insights from Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse and others. He worked with Picasso painting stage designs for the Russian Ballet in 1911 and with Marc Chagall painting scenes for Stravinsky's Firebird. He briefly attended the Academie des Beaux Arts before returning to America in the 1920s where he would go on to become one of the foremost set designers in the United States. He set up a studio in Kintnersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he worked prolifically until retiring in the 1970s. He passed away in 1986.

The artistic career of sculptor Lilian Swann Saarinen (1912-1995) began with her studies at the NYC Art Students League in 1928, followed by the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan 1936 to 1940. She would live much of her adult life in Massachusetts, as well as Europe, teaching at the Pratt Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Saarinen also participated in a Red Cross rehabilitation program, teaching soldiers ceramic sculpture. Much of the artist's inspiration came from animals and nature; one of her best known works, entitled 'Night', exhibited at the World's Fair in 1939, which depicts the panther Bagheera from Rudyard Kipling's 'Jungle Book', was later set in the Boston Public Garden in 1986. Amongst many projects and commissions for public sculpture and reliefs, often working alongside her husband, architect Eero Saarinen, she designed the 'Screaming Eagle' sculpture for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, as well as producing reliefs for the WPA. Saarinen's broad range within the cultural arts also extended to the literary field, when in 1935 she illustrated 'Picture Book Zoo', followed by the publication of her 1946 children's book 'Who am I?' This engaging bronze sculpture, created by Saarinen circa 1939, depicts a beautifully detailed woman playing the accordion; her stance, leaning back and slightly contrapposto beneath the weight of the accordion, right foot peeking out from her long pleated dress, implicates movement and musical sound, as she handles the extending instrument, moving fingers hands along the keys. Markings include the artist's signature [Lillian Swann] and [Roman Bronze Works]. This piece is in overall good condition, with some wear on wood base.
An original wooden sculpture depicting Hollywood icons Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers by American artist Donn Russell. The piece is titled "Miss the Next Step, Ginger, and You're Out of the Picture". Donn Russell was born in Boston in 1929 and would go on to attend the Boston Museum School, the Pratt Institute, the School of visual Design and the Art Students League in New York. His first public acclaim was winning the top award at a National Academy of Design Annual and would be followed by numerous other awards and recognitions. His work has been exhibited throughout the world and has been featured in many art and architecture publications, as well as appearing as illustrations in various periodicals like Life, The New Yorker and Fortune.

Henry Clarence Pitz (American, 1895-1976) "Dancers Backstage" Oil on canvas Signed lower left Sight: Height 30"X width 22" Framed: Height 39"X width 31" American artist Henry Clarence Pitz, born 1895 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had a budding interest in art from an early age, going on to attend the Philadelphia Museum College of Art in 1914-1918, and the Spring Garden Institute. Following his services in the Army Medical Corps during World War I, he went on to become a published illustrator as well as author of over 160 books. As a painter, his uniquely expressionistic works portrayed a broad range of scenes and narratives. In this painting are three figures, identified as dancers, set in the crowded backstage space, their posture natural and unrehearsed, unlike how they would appear before an audience. Markings include [Henry C. Pitz] to the lower left corner. Despite presence of wear to the canvas, this painting remains in good condition.
