Following his services in the Army Medical Corps during World War I, he went on to become a published illustrator as well as author of over 160 books. As a painter, his uniquely expressionistic works portrayed a broad range of scenes and narratives. In this painting are three figures, identified as dancers, set in the crowded backstage space, their posture natural and unrehearsed, unlike how they would appear before an audience.
