Large oil on canvas painting by renowned artist George Earl of a St. Bernard named “Tell”. This is one in a series of dog paintings done by the artist. Listed in William Secord’s book “Dog Painting: The European Breeds”. The elaborate frame is finished in gold leaf.

Henry Clarence Pitz (American, 1895-1976) "Dancers Backstage" Oil on canvas Signed lower left Sight: Height 30"X width 22" Framed: Height 39"X width 31" American artist Henry Clarence Pitz, born 1895 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had a budding interest in art from an early age, going on to attend the Philadelphia Museum College of Art in 1914-1918, and the Spring Garden Institute. Following his services in the Army Medical Corps during World War I, he went on to become a published illustrator as well as author of over 160 books. As a painter, his uniquely expressionistic works portrayed a broad range of scenes and narratives. In this painting are three figures, identified as dancers, set in the crowded backstage space, their posture natural and unrehearsed, unlike how they would appear before an audience. Markings include [Henry C. Pitz] to the lower left corner. Despite presence of wear to the canvas, this painting remains in good condition.

Dimensions provided reflect painting without frame.
