Monumental sized 'Dying Slave' sculpture after the original by Michelangelo at the Louvre Museum in Paris, cast by Barbedienne as a showpiece of their craft, with outdoor patina and elements indicating the casting technique which Barbedienne became famous for. Cast in France during the 1880s and marked on a side of the base 'F. Barbedienne Fondeur'.
The 'Dying Slave' is one of Michelangelo's most famous pieces, originally carved in marble during the 16th century. Together with the 'Rebellious Slave', the piece was to serve as large scale ornamentation for the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome.
