Artist Agnes Millen Richmond (American, 1870–1964), born in Alton, Illinois, began studying painting at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, continuing at the Arts Students League, following her relocation to New York in 1888; she eventually became an instructor there, from 1910-1914. Within that period, she was awarded the Watrous Prize in 1911 and would be recognized as one of the most esteemed American woman painters and teachers of the early 20th Century. Although known best for her portraits of female sitters, the influence of French impressionists, not to mention her summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts and Mountainville, New York, drew the artist to paint the natural setting, including landscapes, seascapes and many exterior scenes.
