History of designer: Alvar Aalto, as he is more generally known, was a Finnish architect and designer. His father was a land surveyor and his mother was a post-mistress. His first love was always architecture and once he had graduated, he returned to Jyvaskyla in 1923 to open his own architect’s office.
He worked quietly, designing classical and modernist buildings, and experimenting with creating furniture and sculptures during the 1930’s. However, he did not receive much attention until he had completed the Paimio Sanatorium in 1932, followed by the Viipuri Library in 1935. His reputation grew, enabling him to hold an exhibition of his works in 1938 in New York. He was commissioned to complete many buildings and whilst he continued to design furniture, being the first furniture designer to use a cantilever principle in a wooden chair design, his first love remained in architecture. The works of Alvar Aalto are known to look great in any setting.
