Designer Name: Cartier
Born-Died: 1818 – 1904
Style: Cartier is a name that is synonymous with luxury watches and goods and is known the world over. His geometric designs are Art Deco in style and continue to be highly desirable. However, he was also influenced by Egyptian designs.
Materials Used: Platinum, silver, gemstones, diamond and gold.
Specialty: Jewelry, ornate tableware, sculptures.
History of designer: Cartier was established in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. His design career began at the age of 28, following his apprenticeship with Adolphe Picard, a watchmaker. He took over the workshop where he undertook his apprenticeship and expanded it, building his reputation at the same time.
By 1853, he moved his business to the Palais-Royal district at 5 Rue Neuve des petits Champs in Paris. It was at this location that he designed and sold jewelry that was highly sought after by royalty.
In 1874, his son Alfred took over the company and continued to expand the name and range. Cartier led the field into turning the area into an international jewelry center. As the Cartier name became more widespread, further branches opened in London and New York.
