History of designer: Originally from Germany, Harry Elsas started living in Brazil in 1936 and was strongly influenced by the regional culture of the northeast. Elsas was a self-taught painter, muralist and engraver. In 1945, he studied under Lasar Segall, and held his first ever solo exhibition at the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) in Rio Janeiro.
He moved to São Paulo in 1970, and once there he was commissioned to execute murals for Banco Safra in 1971 and for Banco Cidade de São Paulo in 1976. The majority of his paintings were executed in oil on canvas and he primarily depicted peasant folks and animals as his subject matter.
