Designer Name: Jules LeLeu
Born-Died: 1883 – 1961
Style: Jules LeLeu was recognized as an excellent French designer during the Art Deco period. As a furniture designer, he became known for his opulent aesthetic. His style and choice of fine materials aligned interior furnishings with works of art.
Materials Used: Jules LeLeu used materials ranging from lacquer and ivory to sharkskin and exotic woods.
History: Jules LeLeu started his adult life as an aspiring decorative painter. However, after World War I, he turned his attention to his family's furniture making business. During these years he worked alongside his brother as he honed his furniture designing skills.
LeLeu did not receive the recognition of many furniture designers of his time; however, he was still held in high regards within the decorative arts community and was therefore awarded many commissions for individual and bespoke furniture projects. His simple and attractive designs are still highly sought-after today.
After Leleu’s death in 1961, his sons and daughters continued the family business, Maison LeLeu, which still manufactures furniture today.
