Designer Name: Milo Baughman
Born-Died: 1923 – 2003
Style: Milo Baughman was a designer of modern furniture. He loved to create furniture that was not only modern in appearance but fresh, elegant and functional.
Materials Used: Predominantly walnut, iron, burlwood and Formica
History of designer: Milo Baughman showed his creative streak at an early age. At 13, he helped develop an architectural plan for his parents to build their own home. He entered the Air Force after leaving high school, where he was occasionally commissions to help design officer’s clubs.
After leaving the Air Force, he attended the Art Center School of Los Angeles and Chouinard Art Institute, to study product and architectural design. He then worked for the Frank Brothers, proponents of modern furniture and he co-founded Furniture Forum, a publication on furniture design.
He did not start his own designing company, Milo Baughman Design, until 1947. By 1951, his name was growing in stature and reviews in The New York Times hailed his strong designs as innovative, elegant and fresh. He tried to attract interest in his designs, but it appeared fruitless for some time. However, one fortunate interview with Thayer Coggin, where he felt rejected once again, resulted in a change in his fortune, as Coggin decided to take a risk on something that he had never seen before.
