A Brutalist copper-toned iron sculpture by Mathias Goeritz. Mathias was born in Germany in 1915. He studied Art History and Philosophy in Berlin and from 1940-45 taught in Morocco. After WW2 he returned to Europe, living in spain until he and his wife emigrated to Mexico in 1949, where they would live for the remainder of their lives. In Mexico he continued his sculpting, painting and teaching and also collaborated with architects. He died in Mexico City in 1990.
This work, "Women Free," by Edwina Sandys, would later be internationally recognized as an 15' installation at the Vienna United Nations Office.
