American expressionist oil on canvas painting titled 'The Engulfed Cathedral', painted by Raymond Breinin (1910-2000) in 1942. The piece is inspired by Claude Debussy's 'La Cathedrale Engloutie'. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner and marked, signed and dated 1942 on the back. In a hand carved original frame, made by the artist. In great vintage condition with age-appropriate wear.
Breinin, was a Russian-American painter, was born in Vitebsk, Russia, where he attended the Vitebsk Academy of Art, studying under Malevitch. He came to the United States in 1922, where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
He executed numerous murals for the WPA and exhibited over a long period of time at the Downtown Gallery in New York City, one of the city's foremost art galleries of the period. His work can be found in most of the major art museums of the United States.
