After Pietro da Barga (Italian, Rome, active c. 1574-1588) "Farnese Bull" Patinated Bronze Sculpture, late 19th century, depicting Antiope directing her sons Amphion and Zethus attacking Dirce as a shepherd and his dog look on, on a rectangular plinth. 27" H x 19" W x 19" D.

Note: This sculpture derives from the famous marble statue discovered in the Baths of Caracalla in 1545. The next year, it went into the possession of the Pope's family in the Farnese Palace in Rome, where, in 1550, it was partially restored under Michelangelo's advisement; it underwent a second restoration by Gian Battista Bianchi circa 1580. A portion of the Farnese Collection, including the Farnese Bull, was sent to Naples in 1788 and later placed in the Museo Nazionale, where it still remains today.
